At Southwest Orlando EyeCare, we take a lot of pride in the number of different ocular health conditions that we are able to treat. We have invested a lot of time and energy into making sure that we stay up to date on the latest treatment options in our field. Because of this dedication to our patients, we have provided exceptional care to the individuals and families who live in the Orlando area from the first day we opened our doors. There are a number of conditions that are optometrist team encounters on a regular basis.
We place the needs of our pediatric patients first. To that end, many of the children's conditions we see are handled by our pediatric eye doctor. Some of the most common conditions we see include:
Myopia: Myopia is the medical term used to describe nearsightedness. When a child has this condition, light enters the eye but is not focused directly onto the retina. Instead, light is focused in front of the eyes. This means that children are able to clearly see objects that are close to their eyes but not objects that are far away.
Hyperopia: In contrast, hyperopia is the medical term used to describe farsightedness. Those who have hyperopia are able to see objects that are far away from the eyes but not those that are close up. This happens because light from the eyes is being focused behind the retina instead of directly onto it.
Glaucoma: We also see many patients who have developed a condition called glaucoma. In this condition, the pressure behind the eyes becomes elevated. As a result of this elevated pressure, the nerves and blood vessels behind the eyes start to suffer. In order to prevent vision loss, immediate treatment is needed.
Lazy Eye: Also called amblyopia, this is another common eye condition that is seen in children. In essence, the brain is only gathering information from one of the eyes. It is ignoring signals from the other eye. Vision therapy can help teach the brain to pay attention to both eyes. This needs to be done quickly before the lazy eye completely shuts off.
